My Autumn Home Tour

Fall is my absolute favourite season!  The changing leaves, the cooler weather, the harvest; it gives me such a sense of comfort and coziness.  As a decorator, I look forward to changing up my décor for each season and holiday.  This season I wanted to have my home reflect those comforts of fall that I love, while keeping the look polished and elegant.

Below are some tips on how I achieved my fall look:

1. Swap out your Pillows and Throws

Changing your pillows and throws on your sofa or bed is a great way to add a quick and fresh new look to your space for the season.  It can give your space an entirely different feel for the holiday.

Seasonal décor can run the risk of looking too cheesy or over-done.  These pretty grey, white and gold pillows are soft and delicate.  While they feature fall-inspired patterns, they still maintained the elegance that I wanted for my formal living room.  And the touch of muted metallic gold adds just enough glamour.

I combined the pillows with a fur throw for that extra bit of texture and coziness that fall is all about.

2. Choose Holiday Decor that Complements your Existing Style

Just because it's fall doesn't mean that you should create a pumpkin patch in your living room.  Your seasonal and holiday décor  should complement, not compete with, the existing style of your home.  Consider your existing furniture pieces and colour scheme and find seasonal items that will work well in the space.

The style of my living room is modern with a touch of glam.  These throw pillows and shiny glass pumpkins were the perfect complement.

The soft greys and whites in the pillows work very well with my silver velvet tuxedo sofa, and with the monochromatic colour scheme of my living room.  I don't normally have gold in that room, but I introduced it here in my fall décor because it added a touch of warmth to the space that is welcome for the fall season.

3. Test out a Few Different Options

Picture
I came across these pretty burn-orange pillows with a gold leaf pattern that I really liked. Although the monochromatic look normally works best in my family room, I thought why not try to add a pop of burnt-orange for fall?  The elegance of the metallic gold and the beaded details on the pillow, allows it to tie in with the rest of the décor.

Now I have two fall looks that I can interchange.  The addition of the burnt-orange pillows instantly transforms this room from a monochromatic space to one with an autumn punch.

Directly across from my tuxedo sofa is my buffet and studded wing-back chair.  I added a plush orange pumpkin on the chair to tie in that side of the room with the burn-orange pillows on the sofa.

Now that I had added in some orange into the space, I could continue that colour scheme with this beautiful hammered copper bowl.  And how much fun are these plush pincushion pumpkins?

4. Don't Neglect your Outdoor Space

This year our fall weather has been so beautiful and mild.  Thanks to this mild weather, I've been able to sped a lot of time in my backyard, so naturally, I thought to carry my fall decorations into the backyard as well.

Again, I want to reiterate the principle of selecting holiday decorations that complement your existing décor style.  Unlike my indoor space, my outdoor one has a lot of rustic elements.  I picked up on the existing rustic décor with my fall accessories, like these cute grape-vine pumpkins with mini twinkle lights.  They are a great way to light the steps when it's dark out.

Tree-bark candles are perfect with the other natural outdoor elements.

My last touch was to top my outdoor reclaimed-wood coffee table with these rustic pumpkins.  Sting, burlap, twigs and bark give these pumpkins a charming hand-made look.
I hope you enjoyed my Autumn Home Tour.  How did you decorate your home for fall this year?  I'd love to hear your thoughts and ideas.
